Journal entry: What makes an object an object

What makes an object an object?

Why do we define an apple as an apple or metal as metal? I feel that the word object or the concept of what an object is has been around for so many generations that we seem to forget it, or subconsciously know but cannot find the words to orally define it. The universe knows an apple is an apple because we have been born into a society that already has a name for it. The reality is that it is a thing that is born from something bigger which is connected to the ground. In history, we have come to name and classify objects based off of its function or its lack of function. We even classify objects based off of its origin.
