In this project, we are allowed to discuss the relationship between shadow and secrecy. I think secrets can be both good and bad. It depends on how people use it and how to view it. Sometimes a secret can be good to one person but bad to another person. It can create conflicts and even change people’s life. Secrets are very controversial and are deeply connected with how people talk about them.
This is a photo of a mysterious shadow on the wall of my dorm, which is also the source of inspiration for me. It is made of parallel lines of shadows with a gradual decrease in heights. Also, it is really colorful, which is very different from normal shadows that only contain black. People cannot tell what the object creating the shadow is from neither its shape nor its color.
I used the laser cutter to cut the transparent red acrylic board into the shape of mouth when people talk. I think secrets are very related to how people talk about them. When you try to tell someone a secret, how you speak decides how others view it. Also, there are always people trying to undercover other people’s secrets, therefore, if someone has a secret, he/she will be really sensitive to people’s words. Thus, in this project, I chose to use interlocking shapes of mouths to create the shadow. I used the transparent material so that its easier to see the overlapping effect.
