Bridge Project 5: Genius Grant

Throughout modern history, graffiti has been a powerful way for people to express their ideas, positive or negative, toward political and social movements. Graffiti has become a unique form of visual art and culture. Adding to my personal interest in graffiti, I decided to create a mobile application about it. I have studied how to make prototypes of applications, therefore I believe I am the best person to carry out this project.

This application is designed for young people and artists, especially those who are interested in graffiti or work with it. Together they can form a large user base, therefore ensure the popularity of the app. The goal of this app is to help people locate graffiti spreading all over the city, to record their existence, and also to help graffiti artists advocate themselves. In the application, people can take pictures of graffiti that they discover and post them onto the app together with the location information. Also, they can remark the location and write comments. The creators can claim their artwork and explain their intentions and ideas.

To develop a mobile application it usually takes about four to five months, and after that, it needs a server and several revisions to support. Money wise it will need $15,000 per month for a team of four to create the first version, $12,000 for legal, accounting, and comparable fees. The rest of the money is going to be used for advertising and for maintaining the application.

There are a few potential risks needed to be considered. There could be only a few people using the app. It could be hard to define the true creator of an artwork. Bad commenting environment, irrelevant photos being uploaded, and bugs could also be crucial to the application.

This mobile application is designed for viewers to discover and find graffiti they like and also for graffiti artists to be remembered and to share their ideas with other people. It is going to be able to raise people’s awareness toward creative artworks around them, and therefore aiding the graffiti culture. Once the proposal is accepted, I am going to make the prototype, find a group to make the program, and then put it into app stores.
