For my seminar research paper, I’m writing about how the character design and level design behind Super Mario Bros. make the game become a true classic. For this studio project, I’m more focused on the characters that are very impressive to players. I created 3 scenes: one for main characters, one for creatures in the ocean, and one for the villains. I chose to make the most impressive scenes to me personally.
I wanted to create a similar exciting feeling to when players open the game, therefore I created the three pop-up cards so that when you open them there are things coming at you. I made the cards based on the normal scene, the water scene, and the piranha flower because to me these are the most striking things that are always stuck in my mind after playing the game.
When making the pop-up cards, I looked at several tutorials online, and the most helpful website to me is Robert Sabuda’s personal website. He has made a lot of great pop-up books and he has many useful tutorials on his website.
