Bridge #1: Dear E.B.W. Postcards

Strolling around New York City was an insightful experience that evoked many emotions within myself. Through seeing instead of looking, I am pushed to observe more of my surroundings. I stumbled upon different texts around the streets that in a way depicts the spirit of the people of New York. It’s interesting to me how words can communicate such great ideas. Here below are the original snapshots that I decided to use for the postcards.

I am happy that I came across these and captured it in a nice composition. However I notice that these four images do not really go along with each other. So I played around with them digitally in Adobe Photoshop. I formed a concept of using vibrant colors for texts that I want to emphasize on and have the background be in black & white for the contrasting effect.

After being satisfied with the edits, I printed them out and drew on the back part of the postcard with a 0.8 drawing pen. I experimented on calligraphy to give it the raw/authentic feeling. I wrote the letters with pencil first, then traced them with a brush pen. Below are the final postcards. I am satisfied with the end results because it perfectly illustrates my version of New York. Through this project, I could understand more of E.B. White’s fascination towards the city, because in all honesty I never really liked this city but now I might have altered to a better outlook of New York.
