“Pagan Poetry” Dress Alexander Mcqueen (2001) & “Vespertine” Music Box Matthew Barney (2001)

The “Pagan Poetry” dress created by Alexander Mcqueen, as with a number of Bjork’s other ensembles, is adorned with plenty of embelishments, comprising of beads and pearls. The ivory dress contained of voluminous tulle and lace. The dresses bodice was made so that Bjork’s breasts would not have any coverage, with an invisible material holding the corset bodice up. This dress was worn by Bjorn in her Pagan Poetry music video released on 2001.

The “Vespertine” Music Box was placed on this mannequin figure of Bjork wearing the pagan dress. The music box was created by artist Matthew Barney. And was made clear especially for Bjork. The music box is one of Bjork’s most favorite instruments in producing her music.

“Volta” costumes (2007) from Bernhard Willhelm and Icelandic Love Corporation.

These very colorful and knit costumes are representative of Bjork’s “Volta” era. The costumes have bird like features with Bjork’s face covered entirely by the knit.

Connection:

Bjork’s work and aesthetic was inspired largely in part by past centuries while adding a contemporary flare. Her work is very experimental and avant-garde but she continues to trace inspirations from her past. Her inspirations and the way that she portrayed them by putting her own unique twist on it, is similar to the way that I am creating my magazine for my final project. Her innovation was evident throughout the show. I will try to hold that same idea in creating my magazine while keeping the essence of old fashioned, 20th century publications with a contemporary flare.
