DESIGN CONCEPT

As I was walking through chinatown I came across many different smells and textures. I felt very compressed and as if I had little mobility. My senses felt invaded and I was constantly being touched and bumped by people as well as permanently having to  be looking at vendors.  This sense of invasion gave me the inspiration for the structure of my garment. It covers your  mouth, nose, head and arms so, in a way, you are more protected. My theme was cultural appropriation. In chinatown you see many common buildings that have been adapted to fit the Chinese culture maybe by adding a pagoda style roof or traditional Chinese symbols such as red lanterns. Chinese culture wrapping itself around the American building is what gave me the inspiration for the fabric and patterns of my garment.
