Chaise Honnête
For my final project, I wanted to make a piece that captures elements and themes of erasure within the Art Nouveau design period with a contemporary twist. As we learned in class, there was an ever-present curvature of line that gained influence from the rubber vines taken from Congolese land by Belgian colonizers. I want to make a chaise that shows the literal whiplash imagery displayed in Art Nouveau. The theme of erasure would be represented in the color choice of the object, black, and also in the sketched faces on the chair. These faces would appear to be in agony, symbolizing the darker truths and effects of colonization.
