Found Object Sculpture: Pre-Written Female Reproductive System Slate

Artist Statement: Pre-Written Female Reproductive System Slate

For the creation of my found objects sculpture, I aimed to focus on the concept of sexism towards women in society. Sexism is the discrimination and stereotyping of women usually, simply based on their gender. Sexism demeans women and constantly places them below men at home, their workplace, in public places and in almost all aspects of society. Specifically, I wanted to address the objectification of women through demeaning comments made by Donald Trump and other sexist figures of power in society, also using degrading labels placed on women in society. When women are objectified they are reduced to simply breasts, vaginas, and legs. In this piece I wanted to illustrate that a woman is far more than her sexual parts, she is a unique and valued human being. Therefore, I re-created the female reproductive system in an abstract but accurate manner. I utilized cardboard for the structure and white crafting fabric to symbolize the blank slate that all women have, which is then etched with societies labels and comments on the negative ways they view us. I created a compilation of objectifying comments and labels all made by Donald Trump where he explicitly objectifies women in any way possible. I also included a morphed image of a woman’s naked body to emphasize the sexual objectification that women are viewed as just individual body parts.
