TED TALK: William McDonough
This talk really opened my eyes to the importance of responsible and purposeful design. McDonough explains that many of the products we use and design by humans are made with toxic chemicals and harmful materials. He provides the viewer with a series of facts about climate change, global warming, studies and cases about how design should be used to better our living and health instead of harm it.
I feel as though this TED talk really reinforced in me the fact that as a designer I have to use and discard my materials in a responsible way that won’t harm the environment. Therefore, for my final project I’m leaning towards using as many recycled materials as possible.
Alex Steffen
Steffen’s talk focuses on climate change and our future in the planet. He emphasizes the importance of humans lowering pollution and gas emissions in order to save our future and save the planet.
I personally feel that as an aspiring fashion designer climate change and global warming are massive problems that I need to be aware of. The fashion industry is the second most polluting industry in the world and I need to be constantly putting my effort in order to not keep polluting the earth when I make designs and create them three-dimensionally.
Suzanne Lee
Suzanne Lee’s initiative to grow kombucha and use it for artistic and fashion purposes is very admirable. I think this method of growing leather form bacteria is a genius thing to do, because they are using safe resources to make the leather and it’s also a great alternative to cow leather. Also because cows release methane when they are killed it’s much safer to grow this eco-friendly leather from bacteria.
Even though kombucha is a tough and aesthetically pleasing material, I don’t feel as though it’s the right fit to make an entire chair out of this material in particular. Kombucha is also not water-resistant so it’s not very ideal for a chair that needs t be sat on and might get wet.
