Title: Charles James Ball Gowns, 1948
Photograph by Cecil Beaton
- This Image was captured by Cecil Beaton one of my favorite fashion photographers. Beaton captures a beautiful gathering of women in very elegant gowns designed by Charles James a renounced designer in the 1950’s. I love the elegant aesthetic of the gowns as well as, the interaction between the women at the gathering and the space that they are in.
- I believe the design aesthetic of Charles James is elegant, complex, and very modern but classical at the same time. This is also how my fashion designs are. I love to defy normal silhouettes and use elegant and soft colors as did James in his designs in this image.

Title : Picture by Richard Avedon, Suzy Parker and Robin Tattersall, Evening Dress by Jacques Griffe, Folies-Bergere, August 1957
- This image was captured by Richard Avedon a very renowned photographer of the 1900’s. I love the context of the image and the rebellious way model Suzy Parker wears the gown. I love that she’s at some kind of burlesque club, because as a woman in the 1950’s it wasn’t very modest of women to attend erotic shows like these. I really enjoy the narrative in the image as well as, the beautiful and almost revealing gown that she is wearing.
3, I truly feel connected to this image because I like that there is an air of challenging traditional conventions in fashion photography and fashion design. As a Fashion Designer one of my biggest design goals is to challenge traditional design and improve it or modernize it. I truly feel that the designer of this gown is trying to challenge this notions though design and I would love to explore more about what is the thought behind this gown and it’s context.

Richard Avedon, Audrey Hepburn and Art Buchwald, with Simone D’Aillencourt, Frederick Eberstadt, Barbara Mullen, and Dr. Reginald Kernan, evening dresses by Balmain, Dior, and Patou, Maxim’s Paris, August, 1959,
- When I saw this image I was quickly drawn in by the high fashion evening cocktail dresses the models are wearing. The dresses are from Balmain, Dior, and Patou some of my favorite designers. I love the flirtiness of the models and the unique designs of each dress. I admire the details, drapes, and fabric manipulations that were designed specifically for each dress. I am also extremely detail-oriented and believe that the most important things of a design lie in the details. I would love to explore more about the designs behind each one of these evening dresses and discover the meaning of this marvelous fashion photography.
- As a Fashion Design student I feel as though the aesthetic and design of each dress truly relates to my own designs in its modern silhouettes and revealing details. I also admire and am inspired by each design house that designed these gowns and feel very passionate about exploring the design history behind each of these dresses.
