Self-portrait

self-portrait watercolor

I always thought that the person who understood me the best is myself. Thus, when I planned to draw a self-portrait, at first I didn’t use a mirror or a photograph. However, when I really began to draw, I didn’t know how to move my paint correctly. I found that I was not sure about the appearance of each part of me. After I drew a draft, I looked in the mirror and found too many details were wrong. Then I realized that in our lives we often observe and even judge others but tend to neglect ourselves. For this picture, I observed myself carefully, my appearance, facial expression and so on.

In the portrait I am wearing sunglasses. At first these were quite plain but then I decided to draw a cat reflected in one of the lenses. The cat is my favorite animal, and the one that I think is most similar to me in character – independent, free and elegant.

In the picture, the cat and I look at each other, and through this I really want to express that the inner ‘I’ and the external ‘I’ are looking at each other.
