Week 8 reading response

In the article “The queerness and games conference”, there is this particular sentence where games critic Liz Ryerson described Gamergate as an anguished cry against a feeling of being rejected or unwanted by society, coming out of an adolescence of alienation. It is true that while playing games we can hide our identity and our sexuality. We can disguise ourselves in oppose to what we are in real life. For example, if we are introverted, we can fully express ourselves by covering our identity because of the platform in which everyone’s identity is unknown. If people don’t recognise us we become less aware of ourselves and express who we really are.

This idea of expressing oneself with an unknown identity, however, can be negative. The article particularly points out Gamegate so I did some research on it. It turns out that gamegate was an online movement focused on protecting the “gamer” identity. Following the controversy of Quinn, I think gamegate was mostly used by people to trash talk about gamers.
