A Touch of Sin-
The film, “A Touch of Sin” was directed by Jia Zhang-ke. This film follows four story lines, and is based on true events in different parts in China. Jia shares the story of corruption and violence of authority in China. The first section focuses and introduces the character Dahai. The scene that I found most revealing and significant is where Dahai publicly confronts Jiao Shengli, the boss. Dahai and other workers are suppose to cheer and welcome Jiao when he comes off his private planed. Dahai takes this moment to confront him about his alleged corruption. Jaio’s men beat Dahai with a shovel, leaving him bloody and injured. The following scene shows Dahai in a hospital bed and men come into his room to give him some money. The man throws down the money and says, “case close”. These scene demonstrates corruption and how there is no freedom of speech. This moment is also a turning point for the character Dahai.
We Are The Best-
We Are The Best is a film about three young girls growing up in the 80’s. Klara and her best friend Bobo form an all-girls punk rock band and they recruit Hedvig along the way. The girls are about 13 years old, they have short hair and look like young boys rather then girls. The girls challenge the gender norms in society and also in punk. The story is a coming of age story and shows the struggles these girls face in middle school. The scene that I found significant is when Klara and Bobo get get drunk off of wine at the party and Bobo throw up in front of everyone. Later the two are laying in bed and Bobo confides in Klara. Bobo says, “They think I’m ugly and disgusting. Everyone thinks I’m a freak”. I believe this scene is relatable, its a part of growing up that everyone experiences. Klara cheers her up by reminding her that she is apart of the the greatest band and that they are the best. These young girls express themselves by creating music and use their band to escape their issues at school and home.
