1. I created three water color paintings of three different women. Each women represent either a the moon, sun, or stars. This celestial theme is extremely personal to me. I scanned the images and blew them up on starmap I created on illustrator. I took inspiration from On Kawara and labeled each female a simple name in bold print. The names are Stardust, Sunflower, and Night Owl. Each label is it own sticker, made with vinyl printing. In addition I took inspiration from Edward Clark’s pieces with power brush strokes and color choice. (black, white, gray, a yellow, blue, and purple). I also had the figures overlapping on the starmap is similar to the paint overlapping in Clark’s work.
For fun I added constellation styled moons, suns, and stars stickers to add them randomly around the figures on the starmap.
2. During my visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City I came across Edward Clark’s work, Untitled 2009. At the museum I was drawn to his powerful brush strokes.
Edward Clark is an African American abstract expressionist. He is 92 years old and known for painting on large scale canvases. When researching Ed, I learned that he is the first painter credited with working on shaped canvas, which influenced contemporary art in the 1950’s and 1960’s.
I also came across On Kawara’s work, April 24, 1990. The piece is created out of synthetic polymer paint on canvas. Simply, it is a canvas with a black background and white letters that reads,” APR.24,1990”.
On Kawara is a Japanese conceptual artist, he died in 2014. He is known for his Date Paintings. His paintings draws attention to our experience of the world: location, planet, and passage through time.
3. I tend to like realistic artwork and art that has a subject. At first glance Clark’s piece just looks like giant brush strokes and paint thrown onto a canvas. I find this piece, and modern art in general, too abstract and minimalistic for my liking.
I respect how neatly the letters are painted for Kawara’s work. The over composition is extremely organized. I have trouble connecting to this piece as well. For my personal taste the piece is too minimalistic, and I find it boring. The date, April 24, 1990, is obviously important to the artist, but why? For my personal taste, the overall piece is laking color and supporting detail.
4. This theme is extremely personal; the sun, moon, and starts represent the bond my mother, sister, and I have. We even have the symbols tattooed on our wrist.
5. Yes my original idea was to have the females stickers as well and I came up with the starmap after creating the images.
6. My views didn’t really change about the artists. I find both pieces too modern, too abstract and minimalistic for my liking.
