Charlotte Damson- MoMa Visit- Art I Like -1tzf9m0
During my visit to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City I came across Edward Clark’s work, Untitled 2009. When researching Ed, I learned that he was born in New Orleans in 1926 and studied art in Chicago and in Paris. He is also the first painter credited with working on shaped canvas, which influenced contemporary art in the 1950’s and 1960’s. At the museum I was drawn to the large-scale canvas (81 inches high and 64 1/2 inches wide) and his powerful brush strokes. I also admired his use of color, he used synthetic polymer paint on the canvas. White and pops of other bright colors were mostly used on the tan canvas, but he added a hint of black at the top left. This contrast of the black paint to the lighter colors was interesting to me and captured my attention. When examining the painting closely you’ll find the black mixing with the white to create a gray. I believe the hint of gray adds depth to the white paint and the overall art piece. I also enjoyed how the yellow, pink, and blue paints peak out under the layer of the white. In addition, green paint at the bottom left corner is mixed with the white paint. You can find little hints of green at the top of the canvas as well. It appears that the green mixed with the yellow and white paint to make a light brown color. Overall, I found the use of bright colors and the visible brush strokes striking and aesthetically pleasing.
