Washed Out – Trash Self Portrait

Originating from a personal take on sustainability, I wanted to convey my personal relationship with the environment. My brother, a vegan and person of a zero-waste lifestyle implements the same values into my life me and we share the same core values about sustainability and the human footprint. As a person who also produces little physical waste, I wanted to bring attention to  a different type of waste I produce; water waste. As a person who bathes almost everyday, I wanted to bring attention to my disregard of water and how I treat water as ‘trash’. I juxtaposed both the physical trash and the water in the same image in order to symbolize that my personal experience with trash is not so much a tangible, direct  waste but rather a more insensitive and discreet one. This piece also doubles up to raise awareness/comment on water pollution. Altogether, my self portrait is an representation of recognizing my waste and reflecting on how despite people  try to be zero waste/ less wasteful we let desire and simple pleasures take over, which in turn harms our environment.
