Integrated Studio: Bridge 1 Reflection

Bridge 1 Reflection

  • How did your experiences in Studio and Seminar inform each other throughout the process of writing and making Bridge 1?

The prompts given to me through the Studio and Seminar Bridge 1 allowed me to explore different aspects of my psychological and creative being. The process of self-discovery through drawing and writing allowed me to get in touch with my thoughts in a deep and meditative way that I have not done before. To me, the importance of this project was to discover my personal style as a creator as well as becoming aware of the similar themes that take shape subconsciously in my work.

  • What was your intention for the final memoir, and how do you feel you conveyed that intention?

My intention for the final memoir was to depict my experience as a child as if I were still in the shoes of my younger self. I was able to convey this intention through writing in the present tense, which I thought made the narrative more interesting than having left it in the past tense.

  • What did you discover about your work and yourself through revision?

Something I discovered about my work through revision is the importance of checking for spelling and grammar which can drastically improve the quality of writing.

  • Why did you choose to revise either the real or imagined memoir for your final draft?

During the first drafts of both memoirs, I found it very difficult to write a fake memoir. Whenever I started, it would gradually turn into a real event from my life which I would then have to go back and add in some fake information to differentiate the “fictional” event from the real one.

  • What risks did you take in this project? What risks did you decide against taking? Why?

The biggest risk I took in this project was writing entirely in the present tense although my memoir takes place when I was a child. I felt that writing in the present tense would create a less passive form of reading and allow the reader to feel the emotions of the child as they are happening.

  • From this point onward, how would you like to improve as a writer and creator over the course of the semester?

I would love to get more comfortable including imagery into my writing, something I tried to include into my “Real Memoir”,  order to create more vivid scenery which I feel much of my writing in the past has been lacking.
