The High Line: Before and After

I took on The Highline to represent a space that has been reconfigured and repurposed over a period of time.

The High Line, now known as a beautiful walkway for tourists and city dwellers to take a stroll on, had once been a freight train railway, transporting goods into New York City. What makes this railway interesting is that before it had been raised from street level, it would go throughout the streets of the city, often times fatally injuring pedestrians because of the high speeds necessary for travel. The city decided to raise it above ground to no longer leave pedestrians in harm’s way. Later on, in the century, a new method of cross-country transportation lessened the need for freight trains. The city later decided to turn the abandoned railway into a pedestrian walkway.

I decided to create an interactive representation of this repurposed space where the viewer/participant lifts the freight train drawing and is able to see the modern view of the high line.
