A Different Kind of Test (Newspaper Blocking)

First, we had to choose a page from the newspaper and black-out bodies of text except for certain words to create a poem of some sort. This was done by hand, and with only using the color black. The words I chose for the “poem” were words that I thought contrasted/contradicted with the phrase “Greater New York”.

We were also asked to scan a page from the newspaper incorporate our knowledge on color theory into “blocking out” bodies of texts, leaving out certain words to create a poem. When starting this project, I had no idea on what I wanted my poem to be about. Once I found one line of text that I was happy about, I would then use it as inspiration to find another line of text that had the same message or theme behind it. The theme ended up relating to life being a “kind of test” and how we need to make the most out of it. For the color, I used colors from the page’s dominant photograph. Instead of simply doing blocks, I decided to draw the same elements from the dominant picture into the blocks to show repetition and consistency throughout this composition. I was inspired by the mathematical equations of inequalities when graphed, and how depending on the equation, a portion of the graph is shaded. For example, above the yellow line is orange, below is blue; below the green line is a lighter green; below yellow and green is red; and below the gray line are a mixture of colors used in the composition. For this, I basically paired certain colors to be next to colors they compliment.
