To show our learning on color theory, we were asked to create our own color spectrum using the pictures we took of the colors red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet. Each color has an undersaturated light tone and an undersaturated dark tone. Using these colors, we had to create compositions of a landscape, a self-portrait, and music. Overall, my compositions reflect a lot of my Filipino culture
For my landscape composition, I was inspired by vintage travel posters. It is not a traditional landscape, but I wanted to create a composition that would suit the colors I had to work with. For this, I drew a Philippine jeepney, a form of transportation very much used in the Philippines. Jeepneys in the Philippines are very unique and different from one another, as its owners personalize them, decking them out in different colors and different motifs. In the background, I drew Mount Pinatubo, an active volcano found in the city of Zambales. It is a very famous tourist attraction, as its crater is accessible to visitors to trek through. This illustration does not do the actual scenery justice whatsoever. On the jeepney are the words “Mabuhay Pilipinas” which means “Long live the Philippines.”
For my musical composition, I was inspired by Filipino patterns. These patterns can be seen on traditional Filipino clothing used for dancing to certain Filipino songs. Like an actual musical composition, each line of patterns could be like a line of musical notes, the colors speaking, or rather singing, for itself. I tried to stick with the traditional Filipino pattern colors which consist of deep, rich tones to be contrasted with bright colors like yellow.
For my self-portrait, I simply traced over an image of myself. I chose to not trace my eyes because I did not want it to just be a regular self-portrait, so instead I drew an abstract shape over my eye area. Then, for the rest of the composition, I simply used the colors from my color spectrum that was symbolic of the Philippines which were red, blue, and yellow tones (due to the Philippine flag).
