August 29 & 31, 2023
During our first Drawing/Imaging class, we were introduced to this mark-making project. Essentially, we were assigned to experiment with different mediums, such as pencil, charcoal, and ink, by using different application techniques to explore how patterns, textures, and shapes, can be used in future visualization and development. There were three parts to this project:
Project 1A: Gridded Sheets
We started with exploration. Creating with greyscale, we were assigned to make abstract marks across four sheets of gridded paper, utilizing various materials and mediums. This was purely experimental in that we could use whichever mediums we wanted, and were encouraged to discover the different characteristics of each medium.
Project 1B: Word Pairs
Next, using what we learned through the gridded sheets, we were tasked with creating three pairs of abstract marks that represented opposite ideas or feelings. I utilized the different mediums to the best of my ability in order to convey what certain emotions or concepts looked like to me.
Frustration / Comfort – Playful / Serious – Stasis / Movement
Project 1C: Scales
Finally, we created two value scales with nine steps each using any series of marks that we experimented with in the previous projects in order to form an even, greyscale progression.
I used stippling and a series of lines to convey value for the two scales.
These exercises were a good way to get a general idea of how I can potentially use these different mediums in future works and gave me a sense of how to develop concepts in ways that I wouldn’t have thought of before.
