Shared Memory

August 30, 2023

In our first studio class of the year, we were asked to create a shared drawing with a peer depicting a vivid moment or memory from our first couple of weeks here in New York City at Parsons. My partner Angel and I both shared the same experience of being slightly anxious to arrive late to this first studio class, and both ended up taking the stairs up eight flights, leaving us out of breath and with our legs feeling like lead. The irony of us two being paired together helped us work in sync with one another to render the emotions and sensations that we both felt during that moment.

We worked with vine/willow charcoal for the majority of the piece and used compressed charcoal to add more contrast. After 20 minutes we finished our piece. It’s a slightly more abstract representation of our shared visual perspective of walking up eight flights of stairs, and the way we felt like it would never end, us reaching out for something to pull us up when our legs couldn’t move by themselves anymore.

This was the first time that I collaborated with someone in a drawing, let alone someone that I had just met. I think the fact that we both went through the same (albeit funny) experience helped a lot with the subject matter and choosing the medium by which we represented this moment.

  1. I like the way u represented the stairs never ending into twists and darkness, I too feel that way when running up stairs in a panic:)
