We were tasked to create a piece of art that was inspired by and related to the Baroque art period based on the week’s readings and learning. We were allowed to use any form of media, as long as our interpretation showcased Baroque techniques and characteristics.
My work is Baroque-inspired, and it comments on my modern-day view of Baroque art. As we learned about Baroque art, its emotional, “theatrical compositions” (Stokstad & Cothren 2018, 726) are what draw the viewers in. In general, I really admire Baroque artists for their realism and ode to everyday life with dramatic and tense expression. However, there is a slight humor I find in how exuberant/animated the scenes are, and I wanted to play into that with my piece. I chose to draw a humorous scene with typical Baroque characteristics (dull, dramatic lighting, etc.)
Below is my process as well as the final piece. I created the work on my iPad using the Procreate app. Using their program, I was able to exaggerate the lighting with different color effects and layer types.
I’m happy with how this drawing turned out as I haven’t drawn digitally in a while. I do think it reflects exactly what I wanted; the exaggerated lighting and dramatic effect of the mundane scene are essentially what I think of for some Baroque artwork. I do think I could’ve made it more elaborate and that would have provided the richness and more dramatic flare that Baroque art has, but regardless, it turned out well.
