ASSIGNMENT: Create one purposeful design with the following elements –
- Cut one square at 4”x4” as a base
- Cut another shape of any size with curved edges
- Attach onto the base using screws (at least 2)
- Screws should be counter sunk
- Should not stick out the back
- Cut another shape of any size and shape
- Attach onto composition anywhere using dowels
- All shapes should be sanded clean.
I chose to build a cricket bat leaning against wickets on top of the 4×4 base. Below is my initial sketch.
With this plan, I went to the woodshop. Using scraps from the shop, I was able to use one piece of wood to get the 4×4 base, 1×6 bat, and 3×5 wickets. I used the bandsaw to make all my cuts. From there, I used the belt sander for the rounded edges of the bat and sides of the wickets and later used a spindle sander for the deeper curves on the top of the wickets.
With all three pieces of wood cut and sanded, I had to connect them. I used a hand drill to drill holes in the base and bottom of the wickets, and used a handheld screwdriver to screw them together. I used the hand drill to drill a longer hole in the middle of the bat and a hole into the top of the base at an angle for the bat to sit diagonally on the base and lean against the wickets. I then pushed the dowel into the bat and placed the other side of the dowel into the hole of the base, connecting the bat and the base. Below is the final product.
