For our final projects in Integrative Studio 2: Visual Culture and Integrative Seminar 2: Visual Culture, we had to make a final work and essay, respectively. The final work was based on the theme of our essay. The requirements for our essays were essentially to write an academic creative research paper based on the preferred topic that we wanted to explore further. I decided to write about how memory and attachment can affect artists, with a focus on music and the science behind relating music to different periods in our lives. I wanted to talk about music rather than my art practice (illustration) because of how dominant music attachment has been throughout my first year in college. My studio final work discussed memory and attachment as well, but comparatively reflected physical attachment (to souvenirs, sentimental objects, etc.) rather than music.
Below is my final paper. My studio final work is in another post.
Overall, I enjoyed the process of researching and writing for the essay, as well as creating my studio final. The essay helped me reflect on myself and my practice, and I found myself feeling similar ideas to what I was writing about throughout the process, as this essay acted as a tool for me as songwriting is for songwriters and singers. As I mentioned in my essay, I hope that no one who was connected with “that July day” has found this essay, but looking back, I believe that I’d be okay with it now, as writing the paper helped me detach from those feelings. I hope to further expand and explore what this means for my future practice, as well as how I conduct myself for the rest of my life.
