Space Materiality: Charlie’s Telephone Booth

Iterations

Linear model

I decided on a simple structure since my art movement was Bauhaus.

Planar model

I thought my linear model was too simple, so I tried to vary the sizes of the two rectangular prisms. However, I realised that this model made it seem like it was cutting right through Charlie’s neck.

Volumetric model

I realised the flaws of my planar model and decided to go back to my initial design. However, I realised that my art movement seemed unclear in the model.

Final model

I wanted to incorporate more elements of my research into my final design to make my art movement more obvious.

#1: Architecture: Walter Gropius

Date: 1978

I was inspired by the structure of the buildings and incorporated the shapes into my design.

#3: Architecture: Carl Fieger, H. Bauthe

Date: 1929-1930

I was inspired by the transparent glass of the architecture and decided to make my project with transparent acrylic sheets.

List of materials used:

Acrylic sheets 1/4″ thick

28 gauge wire

Fastening systems:

I laser cut holes around the edges of each of my sides and used wire through the holes to bind the acrylic together. I used the same method on the door, but loosened up the wire so that it would open easily.

Reflection paragraph:

I like that my final product has obvious elements of my art movement incorporated into it. I also like how I designed the door handle, because it makes it easy to open without attaching a doorknob with glue. I think I could improve on finding a way to properly attach the door, without it dangling. I also think my design is too spacious compared to the size of my object.

Extra information/images:

My object, Charlie Brown

I punched holes in my final model to test if it would hold together with wire.

Cracks formed in my first door whenever I tried to open because I had bonded the wires too tightly.

Adobe Illustrator file I used to laser cut.
