The title of this work is Sweet Desire a.k.a Burial Piece. Pope.L was buried in the ground on a hot August day for eight hours as he stared at a bowl of ice cream slowly melting in the sun. I think this part of the performance should have appeared more obviously in the photograph since I only realised it when I read the information plate. I found this work to be the most interesting out of the entire exhibition mainly because I read that Pope.L had to be hospitalised due to the performance. The performance revolves around questions regarding the wants of black people. My speculation of the meaning of the performance is to show how society’s oppression of black people have resulted in their inability to act on for what they most desire. They are craving cold ice cream on a hot summer day, yet they are forced to stare at it melt right in front of their eyes.
