Venezia, 2009, silkscreen, 21.75 x 27 inches
Venizia, a two color hand-printed silkscreen, was created after a visit to the magical city of Venice. The image originated as a black and white pen + ink drawing in my sketchbook created while standing on the Ponte dell’Accademia overlooking the Grand Canal. I enlarged and redrew my drawing upon my return home. This served as my key plate by which to expose my screen. In addition, I exposed a rectangular shape of rubylith on a wider mesh screen to print a large field of color behind the drawing. In the final two color print, I envisioned the ground as a patina blue/green and the line drawing as a subtle, gilded gold to evoke the ambiance of Byzantine architecture prevalent throughout Venice.
