Name: Eddie Arroyo
Title of Work: 5825 NE 2nd Ave, Miami FL 33137- (2016-2019)
Selfish viewing- This is a series of pieces that are of the same location and represent how its changed over the course of the four years. Each piece is similar yet different in its own way. I really liked the way that he focused on one location to see how it has changed over the period of four years, from 2016 to 2019. It shows to be the same street and the same building.Concept in mind/Context: The pieces focus on an urban landscape in Miami’s Little Haiti. This is where lives and works. The story unfolds the removal of community through the development of real estate.Curatorial views: Each piece is displayed from left to right. Starting from the first painting which was in 2016, the second piece is in 2017, the third was made in 2018 and the fourth was made in 2019. To show how one place changes over a period of a few years. This also made me think about how one person changes over period a couple years.
Artist Name: Tomashi Jackson
Title of work: Third Party Transfer and the Making of Central Park
Selfish Viewing: This is a piece made by the artist Tomashi Jackson. This piece has a variety of different techniques used. It is show to be very colorful, the orange background and the blue tinted striped paper really brings out the whole piece. The light going through the stripes, create a shadow of the whole piece on the wall, the prints have an impression on the wall.Context/ Concept: Her pieces have a sense of undergrowth of political buttons and photos that connect with historical and contemporary housing issues in New York.Curatorial Viewing: The printed papers are placed on shed like cover which is orange and stuck against the wall. The prints are stuck onto the orange shed but also at the same time are long enough to hang off the shed, the part that is hanging creates a print onto the wall.
Artist: Maia Ruth Lee
Title of work: Bondage Baggage
Selfish viewing: This is a piece made by Maia Ruth Lee. She has recreated packages/bags. There is a lot of bright colors seen in the piece, there contrasting colors which really brighten up the piece. There is rope tied around each bag carefully, the rope seems to be tied tightly, as the bag is bulging out of the rope. This piece shows a stack of bags that are tied together. It looks like rope has been tied around the bag very tightly creating creases in the bag. The bags seem to be made out a tarp like fabric, making it thick and seems as if it can withstand any amount of force. It is made out steel elements which are from New York’s fences.Concept in Mind/ Context: Maia Ruth Lee’s work explores the idea of security, boundary, and translation. She says “unlike a maze which invites us to puzzle a solution out of its many pathways, a labyrinth offers a single rout and a meditative experience.”Curatorial View: This piece is displayed leaning against the wall. The bags are shown to be stacked on top of each other and are of different sizes.
