We started working color in class. Our task was to find a pattern. Initially I found it a little tough to find such a pattern. I was really liked the patterns that are seen on fabrics. The pattern that I initially started off with was this the image below.
However, I changed my design as I wanted it to be slightly more symmetrical, so that it would have some amount of continuation. Here is the second design that I changed to:
I had to simplify the design a little bit while recreating it using the pen tool on illustrator. Once I created the design I used the swatches that I had created from the hue circle and transferred them onto the other file. I then used the swatches to fill in the color.
We had to create nine units and were given specific color combinations that we could work with, such as a triad, a split complement and analogous. However in this case I thought we could work with all of the them, giving me quite a large range to work with. Hence I tried using different combinations of colors such as the triad, the split complement and the analogous to create 9 different units. Here is an image of the one that I created:
In this, I tried to use a different range of colors for each, it almost reminds me of fabrics or the pattern on bed sheets.
However, after presenting this in class, I realized we had to focus on only one type of color combination for all the units instead of having different color combinations for each unit of pattern. I then decided to focus on the color combination called Triad.
The combination that I used on the color wheel is:
I used the triad with the color combinations of Green, Red Orange and Blue Violet, these are all the colors that are equally spaced out from each other on the color wheel.
The triad are where the colors are spaced out equally from each other.
An analogous color combination is when the colors are placed right next to each other- an example of this would be yellow, yellow orange and red orange.
A split complementary is any color the juxtaposed the colors on either side of the complimentary color. An example of this would be, yellow- the complimentary of yellow is blue violet, so you would take the colors on both sides. Hence split complementary would be- yellow, blue and violet.
Once I chose my colors, I started putting them into the design. Here is the first one that I made:
After I made this, I realized that I was I needed to split the colors a little bit, as the two units with the darker backgrounds were together making it look as if it was one unit, and the rest of the units have lighter backgrounds making the rest of the units look like one.
I then changed the units around to make the pattern more evened out. I also tried to focus on using all the colors in the range, I decided that it was important to have a few units that only have one color, some with light and some with darker backgrounds.
Here is the final design:
This is the final design that I created using the triad color combinations. This one is more balanced out compared to the other designs that I created. Each unit looks like its own, however there is still some amount of symmetry and continuation of the pattern.
