Writing Response to Barthes “Semiology”

Semiology is considered to be the study of meaning and the acknowledgement of context whether it is social, political and or cultural. It is relevant to the video that we watched last lesson as the viewers are able to understand the fact that there could potentially be two meanings to a piece depending on the context of the piece and the can be interpreted differently depending on the person taking a look at it. We talked about the Swastika and how that could have completely different meanings if you go around the world, one of the meanings could relate to racist view such as white supremacy however going to another part of the world like Asia, the swastika has a completely different meaning where it is considered sacred and represents peace in the world.

Another example that we talked about was the ‘hashtag’ (#)or the ‘pound sign’ and how that is different from now and then, it used to be used to call an extension in a different country or add in the country code or the area code for the phone to reach that area and now it is used in pop culture. However there are a couple underlying similarities, both of the these symbols are used to categorize different concept or things.

It was interesting to see how one thing could potentially have different meanings if you look at it in a different context whether it be socially, culturally or politically.
