For our Mental Health project, we were told to focus on a topic and create a social campaign about it. My classmate Nitya and I decided to focus on the symptoms of mental health and decided to create stickers that relate to mental health issues.
We wanted to have a range of stickers that would work together but also would be able to work individually. We also wanted our target audience to be college students, such as students from the new school and students from NYU, since we are in the part of the city that is more for students.
Once we decided that we wanted to make stickers, we start thinking about the potential shapes that we could use to make the stickers. Our first thought was a rectangle or a square, but that did not seem to fit. We then decided to go to with a circle as we wanted to give it a clean look.
We then went onto decide the color scheme for the stickers, and decided that we wanted one sticker with a black background, one sticker with a white background and one that is of a different color. We started looking for inspiration to get ideas of how we could design the stickers. We created a collaborative Pinterest board.
Here is a picture of our pinterest board:
Once we got some amount of inspiration, we start designing. We wanted to create one with that was with the finger print to represent how a mental health disorder can affect each person differently, and changes from person to person. The whole idea was to get a message across which related to the to the phrase that we put on the sticker, “Your disorder does not define you.”
The second sticker, we wanted to portray the idea of having a busy mind, which is why we decided to create a scribble and fill it up with color, to show that there are so many things that go on in the mind.
Our third sticker, we designed by using the same kind of color scheme that we used to make the second sticker with the busy mind. The sticker was of a person trying to give themselves a hug to promote self love. Where we wrote the phrase, give yourself a hug today.
These were our designs:
These are the final stickers that we printed. We printed 150 stickers each. Once we printed the stickers, we went around the city putting our stickers around. Here are a few images of the places that we put them up in.
We put the stickers up in different areas such as bathrooms, the UC, the ATM, on the signals and so on.
After we put these stickers up, we took pictures and put them up on our social media, to let everyone know about this campaign that we started. We were lucky to get a really great response from so many people, telling us that they saw the stickers around the city. Some people even asked to have them.
Once we got some feedback from our teacher, we were told, the way that we could make the stickers stronger is by matching the colors of all the stickers, so that it connects them very strongly. The colors that are used in the brain, were also meant to be used in the black sticker and the lines in the finger print stickers.
