  • Grace Paley’s “Traveling” is a memoir about being a stranger who encounters segregation for the first time. How does Paley’s status as a stranger enable her to resist the injustices of segregation?

 

Grace Paley’s “Traveling” is a memoir about being a stranger who encounters segregation for the first time. In the memoir, Grace Paley is depicted as a white woman hence she is considered to be a part of the society that is wealthier, and well-respected compared to the people of color. People/ person of color is considered to be a lower class, have a lower status symbol compared to the people in the White community. Paley being a part of the White community enables her to be able to resist the injustices of segregation.

 

  • While Paley depicts herself as a stranger in “Traveling,” she is still able to find community. What is the basis for this community?

 

In the memoir, Paley depicts herself as a stranger however she is still able to find a community for herself. A community is defined as the ‘ feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests and goals.’ Paley being able to help the woman by carrying her baby, protecting the baby from the man like as if its her own, her connection with the baby and the mother created a sense of community for her because all of the had the same goal which was to accept each other and respect each other no matter the color of their skin.
