All summer, when I was bored, I would paint oil painting sticks. I painted many oil painting sticks and put them in the coffee shop where I often went. So when I was thinking about what I should teach, I came up with the painting stick. Painting sticks became a part of my summer, and there were many times when I sat by the window of a cafe, painting from midday until dusk. So at the end of this summer, I decided to teach others how to paint oil painting sticks, which is also a kind of commemoration of this summer.
At first, I wanted to teach others how to draw a traditional oil painting stick on card paper or gouache. But Amy suggested that I try painting on different materials. Therefore, I tried to draw on card paper, wood board, and acrylic coating canvas respectively. The drawing went well on the cardboard, but when I drew it on the wood, I found that the characteristic of the wood was that it was very slippery, and the colors could not penetrate. Therefore, the color boundary was obvious, and the colors could not be fused at all. So I came up with the idea to draw stick figures that didn’t need color fusion, and I tried to draw nine little stick figures, which were much better than the stick figures I had drawn on card paper. The wood has a high fault tolerance rate, if the color is used wrong, you can use a spatula to scrape off the color, redraw. Finally, I tried to use acrylic coating canvas, and its effect was better than what I expected. In my opinion, it is even more suitable for painting oil painting sticks than cardboard. However, due to my lack of experience, I did not paint the background color thickly, which resulted in the background color becoming very light and the overall feeling of the painting was not strong. But the texture gives the painting a very layered feel.
Amy’s advice gave me a lot of new ideas. Not only was I teaching you to paint a stick, but more importantly I discovered the infinite possibilities of oil painting stick. I don’t have to draw on traditional card paper anymore, and now I can choose different materials according to different subjects. If there is no time limit, I will choose more materials to try. When I do my next project, I think I will be more daring to break through the routine, no longer limit my eyes to the traditional field, and choose some fresh materials, which may bring unexpected results.
