Project #4: Abstract Art

Below is my study of different types of / features in abstract art:

For my fourth project – based on abstract art – I will be taking inspiration from the work of Piet Mondrian. Using his grid compositions, I will create a piece that address the wealth gap and overpopulation in Hong Kong in terms of housing. Hong Kong has a huge issue regarding cage homes – small 2 meter long cage like spaces that low income citizens are able to rent out. They store all their belongings and their lives in these tiny, cramped cage homes. On the other hand, other citizens of Hong Kong live quite lavish lifestyles in their apartment buildings.

The grid structure creates rectangular shapes of different sizes and proportions to demonstrate the difference in the sizes of the houses that a range of Hong Kong citizens live in – or rather, are forced to live in due factors such as the wealth-gap and overpopulation. The larger boxes use brighter colours, whereas the smaller boxes use duller colours alluding to the depressing nature of their living arrangements. Initially, I had planned to simply use primary and tertiary colours, and this was the outcome of the four compositions:

However, I felt that the colours weren’t giving meaning to the piece or justifying its message. So instead, I filled the blocks with colours were selected from images of Hong Kong apartments and cage homes using the eyedropper tool.  As can been seen below, this made the series more dynamic, and the orderly, refined shapes that create the grids juxtapose the chaotic colours within the composition.
