Monuments Field Trip

Columbus Circle is a traffic circle in the New York City’s borough, Manhattan. The monument of the Columbus Circle is named after Christopher Columbus, the explorer who discovered the Americas. On top of the Granite Rostral Column is a statue of Columbus made from marble. The column has little figures of Columbus’s ships made with bronze reliefs. The bottom of the monuments features an angel holding a globe. The monument was one of the three planned for the New York’s celebration of the 400th anniversary of Columbus’s landing. There were several controversies over the removal of the monument which was based upon the Columbus mistreatment of the native people of America. There had been vandalisms, injuries and deaths due to this controversy in 2017.

I want to do this monument because I think there is a lot to work with besides the monument itself. The circle. The three entires into the circle. The five roads that surround the circle. I think it is very interesting to use these aspects of the area in the reconstruction of the monument. The monument itself is very classic and can be reconstructed to make it relate to its context more, which is very interesting.
