My name is Dotun Abeshinbioke and I am a Communication Design Major mainly interested in typography, branding and editorial design. I enjoy creating visually engaging imagery that the audience can often relate to and making it relevant to current events, ideas and etc. My work is usually inspired by my reality and I use it as a platform to speak on issues, subjects and concepts that interest me, putting my thoughts and ideas of everyday life into my work. I use my art as my voice and usually make it accessible for any to understand and relate to.
Bridge 4 was introduced as a memorial project, in which we had to create a memorial for something or someone of our choice. It could be literal or conceptual. I chose to memorialise the Black Panthers in relation to racial injustice in todays society, reminding people that the things they fought against are still happening today. I researched and planned for this project through my seminar homework. I learnt more about the Black Panthers through reading articles and discussing my project with others. The connection between the research, writing and making are evident int the final piece and how I incorporated text and the overall aesthetic of the piece.
In Seminar, I wrote wall text and catalogue text to complement my piece. In studio, I worked on the photographs I took and photoshopped my text onto them, then created a banner which was photoshopped onto my expected installation site. The project communicates changing attitudes and responses to racial inequalities from the black panthers to present day. The most successful aspect are the striking images and the scale.
