My work from the fall months of 2016 are reflective of a glass window into the complexities of family and judgement. Most of my writing from Integrative Seminar has revealed this common theme between family and judgement. In some ways, it is also shown subtly through my Integrative Studio work. For instance, Untold Truths is a narrative of thirteen memories that are centered around my family. Following that, I wrote I remember…, a collection of more memories that began to intertwine my family’s judgements on me. Meanwhile, in Integrative Studio I worked harder on methods that were familiar to me because of my family’s influence. This is especially true for the Portrait and Pedestal project, being that my father is very skilled in woodworking and my grandfather is an excellent sculptor. Perhaps, these strands suggest a needing to live up to expectations mounted by my family.
Moving forward, I would like to spend more time drawing in ink and working with wood. One thing I have discovered from Integrative Studio is that I am more capable of drawing in ink than I presumed. Before the class, I had a fear of ink because of its permanent qualities, but I have come to like it for its boldness. I also have a sudden interest is furniture, specifically home items that have multi-functions. This is an area that I hope to work more with wood and avoid unsustainable materials.
