Jonathan Bach,  Associate Professor in the Global Studies Program and faculty affiliate in the Anthropology Department, has a new book on Germany, memory, and materiality with Columbia University Press, What Remains: Everyday Encounters with the Socialist Past in Germany.

He examines the afterlife of East Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall, as things and places from that vanished socialist past continue to circulate and shape the politics of memory today. The book addresses questions of nostalgia, authenticity and the role of the everyday in confronting difficult pasts.
