Bridge 5: Artist Statement

Artist Statement

The concepts that I explore in my work are very personal. My practice is focused on expressing my personality and a style that best reflects my interests. I would like my art to share thoughts and feelings that I am unable to articulate with words.

I had serious worries of my own that are unknown to others; the sources of my trouble were about deciding between my reality and dream. In my case, in the weighty sack, there were failing to fulfill my parents’ expectations, a fear of failure, living a different life with others, and lagging behind others in society — actually, there were some more, but these occupy most of my worries. All these my troubles have in common is that I was very conscious of the way other people are looking at me like a weird person, which I realized now that actually, it is entirely not necessary in my decision. As I slightly mentioned before, I want to say to individuals who have confused like me from the past that we do not need to care about how and what other people think about me and my future. No one is going to live my life instead of us, so we have to keep focusing on stepping our dream even if some disturbing things go on like incessant interruptions. Therefore, these two projects exactly show who I am and who I want to be. I am going to keep working on my future projects with my own style.

I really love the idea of making clothes and patterns that embrace individuality, rather than creating something that is trendy. In fact, as a designer, I would like to work intimately with each client and help them express themselves in the future. I hope many people will feel a deeper connection with my collections than just superficial beauty. I have my own aesthetic taste, which makes my work unique, but at the same time, I also wish to create designs in the future that will resonate with people. I would like my designs to tell people’s stories and make them feel emotional. When brainstorming ideas for artwork, I will try to come up with designs that can be thought-provoking. I want to create art that asks questions and makes others think in a new way. I will also spend time outdoors and explore new places when sketching in order to find new perspectives. I think I am more likely to have productive ideas when experiencing new environments, than sitting inside of my house.

Reflection

In the studio class, I learned how to do sewing, which is actually the most significant learning for me in this semester. I am so happy because I also found my new challenge which is painting and acting. Both painting and acting were really required a perfect teamwork, and we did. I am delighted with our team result. We did a lot of creative activities, and from here, I learned how to create a new and fresh idea; but actually, it is still hard. The greatest thing that I most like that everyone gave good positive feedback and suggestions to each other, and also, they were full of praise for others’ works. I also learned the better way to say a proper comment from my lovely classmates.

In the seminar class, I learned a lot of reading and writing skills by having a talking Notes and essays homework. Learning Research Essay was helpful because another English class also do it, and I can save my time because I already know how to do research and find a reliable source. By recording myself and having an interview with my partner, I realized what my voice sounds like (it was actually weird) and the problems of pronouncing and speech. I loved the games we did in the class and a small presentation. It helped me a lot to be more closed with the classmates, and the short presentation was an excellent chance to know each other.

In both studio and seminar class, I could learn how to make a good teamwork. It was the really good experience for me, and it is still interesting that three(four) different cultures and backgrounds mixed together and then naturally created our own mini-culture. I also love that both two professors kept pushing us for being more creative, which actually helps a lot to improve and develop my idea skills.
