Brilliant Blue: A Color Study

For my Color Study, blue connected with me most- it’s connotations and its uses in our culture as well as it’s usage in historical American art. I had always identified with the color, something about its depth embodies a sad, safe comfort. Since I chose the color due to its meaning to me, I wanted to incorporate my thoughts or perspective on it in my own piece. Blue feels as if it has infinite depth, as if it can suck me in and keep me safe; blue is a color of expression, of sadness, of comfort, of dependability, of my eyes, and of my mind. Therefore, I decided I would paint my perspective in my favorite blue and collage the history of six blues I wanted to investigate further. I did not want to just collage on paper, the lack dimension felt boring to me. I wanted to use this knowledge that I had researched to possibly teach, or show others what blue means or how it is depicted in culture but I did not want what I made to be unentertaining. To truly enhance my idea, I constructed a little game; I build a cardboard dodecahedron. One half of the dodecahedron is just the plain blues in acrylic, while the other half are collages of the colors original state, where the color may naturally occur in nature, historical art associated with the pigment, and how the colors appears in advertisements or mainstream culture/media. Making a tangible shape seemed the key for people to become more interested in interacting with my work, as well as has the capability to teach them some facts about different blues in the process. With two pieces, equally different in shape and content, I wanted to juxtapose my perspective of blue against the worlds.

I discovered how much blue truly is used in mainstream culture for branding, companies, and even government institutions. Due to the ocean and the sky, the calming pigment is an emblem of dependability, strength, and tranquility. Hence its meaning and its symbolism in nature, technology brands all over the world take advantage of its trustworthy message.
