Studio Inspiration Collage

For Integrated Studio, we were asked to create a collage using content that inspires us including music, art, books, people, etc. I began by printing photos of my family, impactful art, as well as influential books and music. My idea was to stitch the photos on painted canvas and connect them through colored string; the colors of the canvas were to represent the feelings those photos evoke for me while the color of the string reflects the deep underlying connection amongst each photo. The first canvas I stitched is the fairly plain looking one because I wanted to keep the focus on the photos (which were carefully chosen) and the color of the string (white=purity). The next two I painted with the colors yellow, green, and orange;  I stressed the color yellow heavily across these pieces as I wanted to communicate the immense joy such content has elicited for me in my life. The green and orange were meant to convey the creativity and safety I felt in listening, viewing, reading, or existing.

I wanted the string to also suggest that I am inspired by connection- the idea that all things may be connected in some way.

After finishing the pieces, I found my common underlying theme was in humanity’s raw, intense, vulnerability. It is the overwhelming surreal nature of existing that excites me; the barren bones of living, of connecting, of developing, of insanity, of empathy, of human connection and the human condition. This is why I focused on the clowns- because I was drawn to the state of madness. It is also why I studied blue- because I was interested in how it invokes a sense of security as the color of the vessel in which we live. These human subtitles and extremes interest and excite me.
