Production intern | Layla Rudolph | Journalism + Design

Layla Rudolph (she/they), Journalism+Design ’24I chose this image that my friend took of me because it shows me doing what I love. Photography is my passion and this photo was taken when I needed to complete an assignment so I ran out of my house in my pyjamas and started shooting.
Unpaid Internship Grant

Company: Gen-zine

Type of work: I helped them build their video content on social media.

Where did you find the internship: LinkedIn

Would you recommend your internship to another student? I think it was a good first internship experience. So I would recommend it to freshmen and sophomores.

Internship Description Description
I worked with Gen-zine as a production intern, where I helped them build their social media video content. I wrote scripts, filmed content and collaborated with other interns and my boss.

Who was supporting you in your work? How did you work with them?
I didn’t have much communication with the university for my internship. But, the person who helped me get the grant was Allison Lichter-Joseph

How has this project has been impactful or transformative — for you personally or for those this work has impacted:
I feel this internship has helped me figure out what I want to do and what I’m good at. It helped me practice self advocacy and learn to not just go along with whatever because I’m allowed to have boundaries as a worker.

What would you do differently? How would you advise a student who is going to do something similar?
I would advise a student to make sure that you’re advocating for yourself and not wait too long to do so. I think that was what I would do differently. Instead of being scared and somewhat waiting till the last moment to be a self advocate.

This is a photo my boss took of me on my first day shooting tiktoks for Gen-Zine. I think this photo represents the communal energy that is Gen-Zine. Gen-Zine’s goal is to democratise journalism and that was what we were doing on this day, listening to the public’s opinions

Short summary
My experience with Gen-Zine was a generally positive one. I’m grateful because it helped me figure out what I love.
