Project 1 – Initial Concepts

Safety/Defense

Design 1

Both of my designs were based on the congestion in Chinatown, and the potential need for isolation or defense from others. This first design is more of a traditional take on Chinese Armor. It’s a chest piece meant for physical protection, and features a strap that goes diagonally across. This would be used to carry any objects or commodities the of the wearer’s choice. An ancient Chinese coin would be attached to the armor, potentially appearing to be an insignia or badge of some sort, intimidating those who come across the wearer. This theme of intimidation would be the main point behind wearing this (and my second design), but the armor would also serve a practical use if the  wearer had encountered physical danger (cars, people, etc.). The cloth around the upper waist resembles the cloths found in certain areas of Chinatown.

Design 2

This is piece is designed to resemble/mimic the clothing wore by the NYPD, thus exhibiting a sense of authority. It also features an ancient Chinese coin, which could resemble a badge. A belt around the waist wouldn’t necessarily have to contain any police gear, let alone a weapon, but the presence of a belt that appeared to be occupied could intimidate anyone who tried to approach them. Reflective material, like the one seen on construction workers and their equipment, would also be used to make them appear to have a role in Police affairs. Chinese influence can be found in the lower section of the garment, but I haven’t come to a conclusion on the shape I’m going to go with. I’m also debating the type of headwear, if any, that I would use. Having a fish attached to the waist of the garment was also considered, in order to serve as a means of deterrence.
