Made In NYC – Maps

Over the first 5 weeks of Made in New York we’ve investigated the geography of New York and its relation to manufacturers. The class has taken trips to the garment district and industry city. These trips serve as a networking opportunity and a guide to bring awareness to artist in New York of the different sources they have to buy material and work with professional designers in order to achieve their own creative goals. Our first project is a guide of New York City and the manufacture hubs within the city.

My first map was a basic contour of the city. I filled the boroughs with different colors to divide the space and make the map interesting visually.

My next step was taking the basic contour and highlight some landmarks. These land marks include parks, baseball stadiums, airports and highways.

This map is where an artist can find manufacturers in the New York area. I color coded each area in order to keep a simple layout.

For the fourth map, I highlighted specific manufacturing hubs that I’ve been to. I modeled these maps in autocad and rendered them in Lumion. This part of the process became personal to me because it shows my love for architecture and modeling. I addressed the fourth map very differently from my peers. Overall I think the cad model can be an effective tool to highlight manufacturing hubs by giving the manufacturing hubs on the map color. This could be a simple and visually engaging way to see the relative location of specific buildings with a hub.
