Virtual reality to me, was just another tool for video games to heighten experience and sensations. However, through today’s lecture on VR history, I learned that VR could be much more. The VR lecture was interesting and I learned that VR’s existence has also been longer than I expected. I thought that VR had just recently been introduced to the technological world but I learned that it has been around for longer. The talk that the “grandmother” of VR had in her video gave me a different perspective on Virtual Reality. I remember that she said something about VR being used to create a motivation for change. She takes real situations in the world like Syria and uses audios and videos from real life disasters and events to simulate empathy and emotion. It gets people to want to make a change and also brings awareness. This is believable because even though I have never experienced this type of virtual reality, I do have experience with virtual reality where I was in a scary roller coaster ride and it actually felt pretty real. Even though the graphics weren’t that realistic, the fact that figures are seemingly right in front of you makes it feel real. I feel like VR stimulates emotions faster than just looking at a screen. The other video of Chris Milk talks more about emotions. I like that he summarized his talk by saying that VR makes people more human. Overall, I think that through these videos, this lecture showed me another side of VR rather than another tool for video gamers.
