I found the talk by Zohar really interesting. I have never personally experienced VR before, however, based on how immersive the sound walk was, I can only imagine how intense the visual and audio could be when put together. I never really knew the abilities of VR used outside of the gaming or art world so when she talked about how journalists use it in order to let people experience the stories that they hear on the news, I thought it was brilliant. The small clips she showed us about the man fainting from hunger in a food line and the bombing in Aleppo really triggered an emotional response to me. Even though the graphics may not be that photo-realistic, only someone with no empathy would feel nothing from it. Just the feeling of being somewhere like that, whether realistic or not must be really frightening and eye-opening as to the things that go on in the world. The whole idea of showing these kinds of videos to world leaders at the UN is ingenious. Sure the public can slowly change their opinions about things but for more rapid change, you need to change the minds of those who can make actual official decisions as to policies. I’m really interested in the notion of 360-degree video as something I’d like to explore for my final project.
