John Benton’s talk I found engaging because of his use of technology to communicate his presentation visually. The video examples of what he was referring to really helped me engage in his content and understand the applications of what he was referring to. John Benton discussed Virtual Reality as “hacking the brain” and that I totally could understand and relate to. Technology has become such a saturated part of our lives that interaction with it now is so second nature, especially in younger generations. He goes on to talk about VR being a really visceral experience, but I liked how he notes how many different ways VR can be used in different technologies. I think it is really interesting to be able to use VR as a platform for artists to build upon in whatever medium they work in. I really enjoyed the presentation overall and loved how he showed examples of the VR experience in film and art etc. The only critique I would have would be his tutorial of Unity. I felt like because he is so experienced and advanced with the software, he had a hard time simplifiying it enough for someone with no experience to understand. I felt that I hadn’t really learnt much about the basics, and that he git carried away showing us all these other things without really delving into the most simple parts of the program that we could start to learn and develop.
