An interactive art exhibit that I have always been interested in is The obliteration room by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama. It is an installation of a seemingly normal living space, complete with furniture and ornamentation, colored entirely white. The viewers of and visitors of the exhibit are invited to collaborate with the space- they are given a few stickers of colorful dots, and are told to stick them anywhere they’d like. Over time, the colorless and lifeless space becomes invigorated, or “obliterated”, according to the artist, having been visited by thousands and thousands of collaborators. The main factor that interests me about this work is how you can clearly see the change in the space, the stickers that create a colorful explosion and allow every member of the audience to leave his or her mark. Every visitor interacts with the space somehow, aside from placing the stickers, by sitting down on the furniture, moving around the forks and plates, or even just walking through the exhibition. The interactive element of a few simple actions create a visual space that is sensual and exciting.
